The Gymnasium Am Kothen is a bilingual high school in Wuppertal . A special focus is on the artistic and musical field.
history
The school was founded in 1823 as a higher city school , in which girls and boys were initially taught together . The girls moved to Karlsplatz , where the school developed into a girls' grammar school: first in 1926 it became the Oberlyzeum Mittelbarmen , which was merged with the Unterbarmen Lyceum in 1935 . When the school building was destroyed in World War II , the school moved to Erfurt. In October 1945, classes at the municipal high school for girls were resumed in the rooms of the former Oberbarmer Lyceum with women's school on Sternstraße, which was created in 1886 from branch classes of the girls' school on Karlsplatz.
In 1961, the city of Wuppertal decided to build the current Barmen girls' high school on the edge of the Kothener Forest , which was completed in 1965. The co-education was reintroduced 1970th Since 1971 the school has had the current name Gymnasium Am Kothen . A bilingual German - English branch from the fifth grade was introduced in 1995.
