The Bayreuther Straße grammar school is a grammar school founded in 1907 in Elberfeld (today part of Wuppertal ).

history

The high school at Bayreuther Str. 35 was founded in 1907 as the Royal Realgymnasium in Elberfeld . It was renamed in 1918 as Staatliches Reformrealgymnasium , in 1927 as Hindenburg-Realgymnasium , in 1937 as Hindenburg-Schule as a state high school for boys and in 1945 as a natural science high school . Since 1974 the city of Wuppertal became a school authority, the official name is Städtisches Gymnasium Bayreuther Straße .

In the years 1952/53, an extension of the building was carried out on behalf of the Wuppertal State Building Authority according to a design by the building assessor Morgenbrodt. In 1963 a new class wing was completed, and in 1964 a scientific wing followed, the design also comes from Morgenbrodt.

Facade design of the gym

In 1974 another extension wing and two sports halls were completed. The artist Rainer Menke was commissioned to design the facade of the south-west corner of the gym . According to his design, twelve approximately 75–80 mm diameter, different colored aluminum tubes were installed horizontally.

Five years later, the school was attended by more than 1,000 students for the first time. Since 1992 the grammar school has been teaching five days a week. In 2001, the class wing was again expanded by six classrooms.

In 2007, the writer Michael Zeller worked together with class 7d as part of the project "Schulhausroman" led by Anne Linsel . The result was “The Black Box” in 2008.

100 year celebration and 111th anniversary

In the week from September 8th to September 15th, 2007 the school celebrated its centenary. For this purpose, a sports festival took place on September 13, 2007 in the stadium at the zoo and, at the end of the festival week, a school festival took place on the school grounds on September 15.

For the 111th anniversary, a sponsored run, a project week with a school festival and a ceremony in the historic town hall were held in September 2018 .

The A wing is the old school building. It was completed in 1907. In the A wing there is a secretariat , teachers' room and several specialist rooms as well as a large room for class work and exams . The school's auditorium is located on the top floor . The old building was recognized as a monument on August 29, 1991 .

The E-wing of the grammar school contains music and art rooms, classrooms as well as two computer and technology rooms. The “bunker” is located on the lowest floor. This is a larger room that is also used for events, class work and exams. On the ground floor there is also the room for the school medical service , which was launched in 2002 as part of a sponsored run . While the E-tract was renovated from 2008 to 2011, the lessons for the pupils of one ninth and four tenth grades took place in containers .

In K-tract the rooms of grades five through nine are.

In the science wing (N wing) of the school there are biology , physics and chemistry rooms as well as a student café.

Observatory

In September 1969, a school observatory was set up on the roof of the wing of the K wing with the help of the Bundeswehr. It was shut down in 2001, but with the help of the alumni association, it was reactivated in January 2011 after two years of work. The observatory with a rotating dome has three telescopes, including one with a focal length of 2 m.

Plaque

On November 20, 1921, a memorial plaque for those who fell in the First World War was inaugurated. This 2 × 1.80 m plaque of honor was created by the Elberfeld sculptor Edmund Nolden and hangs on Corridor 2 in the old building, it reminds of the five fallen teachers and 44 students. Originally the names of only 43 students were noted on the board, one was added later.

cenotaph

On September 29, 1957, a ceremony was held on the occasion of the 50th anniversary and in memory of the teachers and students who died in World War II . The memorial, which was on the wall in the entrance area of the old building, was inaugurated at the event. Hellmuth Grüttefien's memorial shows the names of the four fallen teachers and 170 students on small individual ceramic plates. After the renovation in 1966, the memorial was moved to its current location in the corridor connecting the old and new buildings. The relaxed arrangement of the plates with the names was changed because they previously indicated the silhouette of a tank.

Armin T. Wegner bust

To the left of the memorial plaque for those killed in the First World War is a bust of Armin T. Wegner . The bust was created by the Armenian sculptor Alice Melikian from Los Angeles . The bust was donated by the Armin T. Wegner Society in 2006 on the 120th anniversary of Wegner's death .

Redevelopment

The school has been extensively renovated again and again. In 2006, the renovation work on the A wing was completed except for the auditorium. The E-tract was renovated from 2008 to 2011 .

Student café and canteen

In 2001 the first of two student cafés was opened in an old classroom in the schoolyard. The idea went back to students in grade 13 at the time. However, when they left school, mothers agreed to take over the sale. In 2005, the second school café was opened on the ground floor of the science wing. After the new cafeteria building in the schoolyard went into operation in 2011, the first student café was closed.

Inclusive class and inclusion

In the 2007/2008 school year, an integrative class was set up in which 16 students and eight special needs students form a class community. The 16 students who are taught together with the special needs students have volunteered for this class. Two classrooms were converted accordingly for the integrative class; among other things there is a kitchen. Every common lesson in the class is organized by subject teachers, special school teachers and social workers. In the years that followed, further inclusion classes or classes for common learning were set up.

Exchange program

The school has partnerships with schools in Italy , Australia , France , India , China and Israel .

Italy

Since 2003 around 20 schoolchildren have been visiting Lucca every year for about a week , where they live with host families with students from the Liceo Scientificio Vallisneri . In the run-up to the exchange, the participating students learn the basics of Italian .

Australia

Every year since 2002, seven students in grade 11 of the grammar school have had the opportunity to attend Darwin High School in Australia for three to twelve months and go to school there. There is also a three-week project-based exchange for around 20 students in Australia every two to three years. The focus is on scientific topics.
