Gerard Donovan

Gerard Anthony Donovan (born May 16, 1959 in Wexford , County Wexford ) is an Irish writer whose novel "Winter in Maine" in 2008 was named "Book of the Year 2008" by The Guardian newspaper .

Life

After childhood and youth in Galway , Donovan studied philosophy and German in Ireland . After graduating, he moved to Germany , where he first worked in a cheese factory and then was employed at the Technical University of Hanover . After a while he returned to Ireland in the early 1980s and studied classical guitar in Dublin, the capital, for seven years. In the following years he earned some money as a musician with a focus on Johann Sebastian Bach . He received his master's degree from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore in the 1990s . Since then he has taught at a college in Long Island .

In the early 1990s he began his literary work and published the first volume of poetry "Columbus Rides Again". He also published various short stories . His first novel “Schopenhauer's Telescope” was published in 2003 in English. With his brothers he took part in the “ Marathon des Sables ” in Morocco. Today he lives in New York City .
