history

Like the Carl-Duisberg-Gymnasium , the grammar school goes back to a school founded in 1579, when a school was founded by the citizens of Barmer and the lender of the Beyenburg office , Countess Maria von Waldeck . This so-called “official school” was founded as a “German school” and became a Latin school around 1600 .

1901–1903, a historicist new building consisting of several wings was built on the corner plot of Sedanstraße / Viktorstraße for the school, which was then run as a reform high school. The draft was drawn up by the Barmer town planning inspector Paul Freygang with the assistance of Peter Klotzbach and Eugen Rückle , the overall responsibility lay with town planning officer Carl Winchenbach . The windows of the auditorium on the 2nd floor above the main entrance were fitted with colored glazing designed by Peter Klotzbach and executed by the Steiger glass painting workshop in Cologne , which showed a view of Burg Castle in the middle window . The style of architectural design was contemporary described as the modern early Renaissance .

In the following years was the usual name of the school grammar school Sedanstraße , in the era of National Socialism , the school in 1938 was temporarily Horst Wessel -Schule renamed. During the Second World War, the building suffered greatly from the bombing of Barmen in 1943 . The auditorium could only be partially rebuilt after the war, and it also lost the colored glazing of the windows. A major renovation took place in the 1970s, with several more modern school buildings being built behind the 1903 buildings. The renovated auditorium was inaugurated on December 18, 2007 and can now accommodate over 200 guests.

Today the school aims at individualized learning and digitization of lessons with support offers, an hourly cycle of 90 minutes, the teacher's room principle and a practical media concept. An iPad class will be set up for the first time in the 2020/21 school year.

Classrooms and schoolyards

Listed Art Nouveau door

In addition to the normal classrooms, there is a natural science wing with biology, geography, physics and chemistry rooms, another with IT rooms, history classes and art rooms, and a fourth wing in which the upper levels are accommodated. Since the school year 2017/18, the teachers' room principle has been implemented at the school, with which teachers can set up and design their classrooms according to their own wishes and needs. The schoolyard is divided into three large parts and was redesigned in 2019. The high school has four floors and a so-called tower (video rooms and old art room). In the old building there is a school library, a self-study center and a free work room. The school also has two computer rooms. The ornamented entrance door and the Art Nouveau staircase in the old building are under monument protection. There are two sports halls on the school grounds, the older of which has existed since the middle of the 20th century and is a listed building. In the school year 2010/11 a cafeteria was set up in a new building in the schoolyard. This is available to all students as a lounge during the lunch break.
