Predecessor schools

A humanistic grammar school was founded in Culm as early as 1554, but it had to close again after two years. There was an Academic Gymnasium since 1692 , which was converted into an Academy of the University of Cracow in 1756 . From 1779 it was again a grammar school until 1815.

In 1818 a new school was founded, which became a Progymnasium in 1821 and a Higher Citizens School in 1827 .

Royal high school in Prussia

history

In 1837 the Royal Catholic High School was established in this building (now 22 Stycznia Street). In 1866 the company moved to a new building (today ul. Dominikańskiej 35). In 1868 the former Franciscan church became a grammar school church.

Structures

The grammar school had nine classes, as was common in Prussia at that time. With over 300 students it was the largest in West Prussia. In 1864/65 there were 543. The students were of German or Polish origin, some of them Jewish (around 30 to 40 each in the 1880s).

The school subjects were Latin, Greek, history, geography, math, French and others. Depending on the denomination, religious instruction was offered as either Catholic, Protestant or Jewish. From 1844 to 1874 there was also religious instruction in Polish. An optional subject was Polish language lessons, since 1840 4 hours for the higher grades, since 1849 for at least two hours for all.

The grammar school had been a center for two Polish Philomats' underground student movements since 1848 . These met to acquire additional education and knowledge of Polish culture. In 1901 they were discovered and banned. Since then there have been no more Polish lessons in school.

Polish State High School

Since 1920 the school was under Polish management and was renamed the State Old Classical Boys' Gymnasium ( Państwowe gimnazjum staroklasyczne męskie ). The structures were also changed. Since 1932 it was called the State Kazimierz Jagiellończyk Boys' Gymnasium ( Państwowe gimnazjum męskie im. Kazimierza Jagiellończyka ). In 1939 it was abolished after the German occupation.

Today the Lyceum and Gymnasium School No. 1 ( Liceum i Gimnazjum ) is located in the building at ul.Dominikańska 35.
