The Gymnasium am Markt ( GaM ) is one of two urban high schools in the East Westphalian city ​​of Bünde in North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

Name story

The school was founded in 1882 as an evangelical higher private daughter school in Bünde , but still in the Auf'm Rott buildings. After that, the names changed to Upper Protestant Girls' School (from 1911), Municipal Lyceum (from 1921), Oberschule for Girls - Grades 1-5 , Urban Modern Language Progymnasium for Girls (from 1955) and, for a short time, Urban Modern Language High School for Girls and Gymnasium for women's education i. E. In 1973 it was finally renamed Gymnasium am Markt, a municipal gymnasium for boys and girls .

Building history

The old building with its auditorium was completed in 1907. Today it serves the upper school and the ninth grades. In 1966 the old building was expanded to include an art and music room. Additional extensions followed in 1970 and 1981. Today these represent the main building. The lower and middle grades are taught here, and most of the specialist rooms and a triple sports hall with a telescopic grandstand are also located here. Another new building for further specialist rooms (including computer rooms with internet access) and some classrooms as well as an astronomy dome and solar energy system were completed in 1998.

Until about 2004 there was an apartment for the caretaker on the ground floor of the old building. After his retirement, extensive renovation work began. A cafeteria has existed there since 2006 .

In the 2011/2012 school year, an extension costing 1.99 million euros was completed. Nine classrooms and a music room were created here, replacing that of the old building.

School partnerships

Partnerships exist with a school in Rives ( France ) and a private school in Malta . A trial exchange program with Struer ( Denmark ) is planned for 2011 . There is also an exchange with the English city of Hastings . In contrast, the exchange with the Paisley Grammar School in Paisley , which had existed since 1988, was discontinued in 2006. In 2013 there will also be a tripartite meeting between the grammar school and schools in Kolky in the Ukraine and in Zgierz (Poland).

Projects

The school takes part in the project The Big Challenge , the non-smoking campaign Be Smart Don't Start and the project School without Racism - School with Courage . The in-school project "Save the Tower" was about preserving the school tower that was in need of renovation. On the initiative of the then class 6b and with the participation of citizens, the project was implemented in 2007.

The project "It's cool to bike to school", initiated by the Gymnasium am Markt, the city and the Bünde police , was honored in October 2008 by the then Federal Transport Minister Wolfgang Tiefensee, along with projects in nine other municipalities . The nationwide campaign under the motto "Children safely on the move in cities" was a traffic safety competition by the ADAC and other public institutions.
