Gymnocalycium borthii is a species of plant in the genus Gymnocalycium from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the Austrian librarian, alpinist and plant collector Hans Both (* 1925).

description

Gymnocalycium borthii grows individually with gray-green to violet-brown, flattened, spherical shoots and reaches heights of up to 10 centimeters with a diameter of 9 centimeters. The nine to 16 vertical ribs have rounded, chin-like projections. The usually five or occasionally up to nine, flexible to stiff, straight thorns are radiating and up to 2.5 centimeters long. One of them is pointing downwards.

The funnel-shaped, white flowers have a slightly pink throat. They are up to 4.5 centimeters long and 5 centimeters in diameter. The diameter of the spindle-shaped fruits is up to 1.5 centimeters.

Distribution and systematics

Gymnocalycium borthii is common in the Argentine province of San Luis near Quines .

The original first description from 1976 by Helmut Koop was invalid according to the rules of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature , as information on the type was missing. Hans Till corrected this in 1987. Graham Charles treated the species in 2005 as a subspecies of Gymnocalycium gibbosum ( Gymnocalycium gibbosum subsp. Borthii (Koop ex H.Till) GJCharles ).
