Gymnocalycium hybopleurum is a species of plant in the genus Gymnocalycium from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet hybopleurum means' Greek. pleuron rib; with humped ribs'.
Distribution and systematics
Gymnocalycium hybopleurum is common in Paraguay .
It was first described as Echinocactus multiflorus var. Hybopleurus in 1898 by Karl Moritz Schumann . Curt Backeberg placed the species in the genus Gymnocalycium in 1936 .
Gymnocalycium hybopleurum is an uncertain taxon that has long been believed to be native to Argentina . However, Hans and Walter Till showed that the plants originally described under this name must have come from Paraguay . For the Argentine plants they described the new species Gymnocalycium catamarcense . Urs Eggli recommends that the name no longer be used.
