Gymnocalycium mackieanum is a species of plant in the genus Gymnocalycium from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the English gardener Mr. Mackie from Lakenham.

description

Gymnocalycium mackieanum grows individually with dark gray-green, flattened, spherical shoots that reach heights of up to 8 centimeters with a diameter of 12 centimeters. The 16 to 20 ribs are divided into weakly developed cusps. The areoles on it are white. The mostly four to seven central spines are 2.5 to 3 centimeters long. The nine to eleven thin, straight, light yellowish-brown radial spines are up to 2.5 inches long.

The broad, funnel-shaped, light greenish-yellow flowers reach a length of 6 to 7.5 centimeters and a diameter of 7 to 8 centimeters. The short club-shaped fruits are dark green.

Distribution and systematics

Gymnocalycium mackieanum is common in the south of the Argentine province of Buenos Aires .

It was first described as Echinocactus mackieanus in 1837 by William Jackson Hooker . Detlev Metzing , Massimo Meregalli and Roberto Kiesling placed the species in the genus Gymnocalycium in 1995 .
