Gymnocalycium schickendantzii is a species of plant in the genus Gymnocalycium from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the German chemist Friedrich Schickendantz (1837–1896).
description
Gymnocalycium schickendantzii grows individually with dark olive-green to brownish-green, spherical to short cylindrical shoots and reaches a diameter of up to 10 centimeters (rarely up to 14 centimeters). The seven to 14 (rarely up to 18) ribs are clearly divided into cusps. Sometimes there is a central spine . The six to seven slightly flattened, sideways or downward curved radial spines are reddish gray to yellowish brown and up to 3 centimeters long.
The white to pink or dirty yellowish green flowers reach a length of up to 5 centimeters and a diameter of up to 3 centimeters. The egg-shaped to slender club-shaped fruits are green to slate-blue.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Gymnocalycium schickendantzii is widespread in the north-west of Argentina in the lowlands under bushes in partial shade at altitudes of 100 to 1200 meters.
It was first described as Echinocactus schickendantzii in 1896 by Frédéric Albert Constantin Weber . Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose put the species in 1922 in the genus Gymnocalycium .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
