Gymnocalycium stellatum is a species of plant in the genus Gymnocalycium from the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Gymnocalycium stellatum grows individually and later sprouting with gray-green to brownish-gray, flattened spherical shoots and reaches a diameter of up to 10 centimeters and more. The seven to eleven (and more) flat, rounded ribs have no chin-like protrusions. The three to five straight to slightly curved thorns are dark brown and gray with age.

The white flowers reach a length of 6 to 6.5 centimeters and the same diameter. The fruits are cylindrical.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Gymnocalycium stellatum is distributed in the Argentine provinces of Catamarca and Córdoba at altitudes of 500 to 1500 meters.

It was first described in 1925 by Carlos Luis Spegazzini . The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Gymnocalycium stellatum subsp. stellatum
  • Gymnocalycium stellatum subsp. occultum Frič ex H.Till & W.Till

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
