Hemopexin is a glycoprotein in the blood serum of vertebrates , the hemins binds and liver transported, where they are degraded. In this way, it protects the body from oxidative damage that free hemin molecules could cause. In addition, the iron contained in hemin is recycled in the liver.

Hemopexin belongs to the group of β-globulins , its molar mass is 80,000  Da and the average serum concentration is 50–115 mg / dl.

If a large amount of red blood cells is destroyed, as is the case with hemolytic anemia , the serum concentration of hemopexin falls because this forms bonds with the released hemin-containing compounds such as hemoglobin. This fact is used clinically when the hemolysis is so severe that the determination of the haptoglobin concentration is no longer informative.

An increase in the hemopexin level has been described in patients with malignant melanoma .
