Hotel de Ville in Thionville

The Hôtel de Ville (German town hall) in Thionville , a town in the French Moselle department in the Lorraine region , is a former monastery of the Poor Clares from the 17th century. The Hôtel de ville with the address 2 Square de l'Hôtel de ville has been protected as an architectural monument ( Monument historique ) since 1991 .

history

In 1629 the Poor Clares settled in Thionville, where they first lived in a house on Rue de la Vieille-Porte. After receiving a plot of land near the Moselle in 1635 , they built a new monastery there in the late Renaissance style , which was completed in 1641. During the siege of Thionville by French troops in 1643, it was damaged and rebuilt until 1665, so that the chapel could be consecrated that year . In the 18th century, additional outbuildings were built to serve the monastery girls' school. During the French Revolution , the monastery was secularized and the buildings were used for military purposes. From 1804 a municipal hospital was established in the former monastery, which was located there until 1898. The Hôtel de Ville has now been set up in it and further renovations were carried out in the course of the 20th century. The rest of the former chapel is now used as the town's wedding room (salle de mariages).
