history
The Louis XIII style town hall . was built according to plans by Louis Noblet . However, due to financial problems in the city, construction soon had to be stopped again. It was not completed until 1670 to 1672 under Pierre Cottard . The facade was executed as originally planned, whereby the structure was smaller than initially intended. A mansard roof created additional space for administration.
Since 1687 there was a statue of Louis XIV in the niche above the arched portal , which was destroyed in 1793 during the French Revolution . In 1795 a statue was installed symbolizing freedom and defeating the hydra of despotism at its feet. The female figure, symbol of the republic, leans on a bundle of lictors and wears a Phrygian helmet . Underneath, the motto of the revolution is appropriate: Unité Indivisibilité de la République - Liberté, égalité, fraternité, ou la mort (Eng. Unity and indivisibility of the republic - freedom, equality and brotherhood or death ).
