location
The castle site of the Spornburg is located at 495 m above sea level. NN about 1800 m (as the crow flies) west of the center of the village Schnellmannshausen, the castle is opposite the castle Normannstein and was apparently part of a fortification system of the lords of Treffurt .
description
The facility lies on a mountain spur oriented to the south-east, on the southern flank of which an old road from Treffurt and Schnellmannshausen leads upwards towards Ifta and the eastern Ringgau. The castle was separated from the forecourt by a wall and moat that were still visible in sections . In the plan: (1) the Hüneburg, (2) the Heldrastein, (3) the medieval path from Schnellmannshausen towards Rambach, (a) parking lot for hikers on Großburschlaer Straße; (A) The wall-ditch fortification, (B) the castle courtyard, (C) a rectangular structure recessed in the rock, (D) Place of the weekend house built by Pastor Schütz 1934–1935, (E) Barracks of the Stasi.
history
The castle is a high medieval complex and was important in the heyday of the Lords of Treffurt , who secured their territory around Treffurt with the construction of small castles and fortifications. Buildings have been built in the castle area since the 1920s and early historical finds (ceramics) were recorded on this occasion. In the 1970s, a radio monitoring system for the Stasi was built in the castle grounds and operated until 1989.
status
The castle site is a protected ground monument . The area in question is used for tourism and forestry.
