The hill Hüseyindede Tepesi is an archaeological excavation site in central Turkey and contains the remains of a Hittite settlement. It is the site of important early Hittite relief vases.

location

The Hüseyindede Tepesi (also Hüseyinbaba) is a hill at the highest point 776 meters high about two kilometers south of the village Yörüklü in the district of Sungurlu in the Turkish province of Çorum . At its southern tip, locally called Ağburun , is the excavation area. The settlement is located about 45 kilometers northwest of Boğazkale , the Hittite capital Hattuša , and 60 kilometers east of İnandıktepe , another Hittite site. According to the results of surface surveys, the settlement has extended from the site to the southwest and west, where agriculture was practiced at the time of the research. According to the farmers, numerous stones that came from architectural contexts came to light there. Therefore, a large part of the settlement is likely to have been destroyed.

exploration

Since 1996 the Turkish archaeologists Tunç Sipahi and Tayfun Yıldırım have carried out surveys in the province of Çorum as part of a project by the University of Ankara . At the Hüseyindede they discovered fragments of early Hittite relief vases on an area devastated by robbery graves. During the emergency excavation that followed in 1997 in collaboration with the Çorum Archaeological Museum , three rectangular rooms and a foundation trench came to light. The rooms showed clear signs of fire. In the rooms, some of them lined up against a wall, were found numerous fragments of floor fragments and closures from clay jugs, as well as other fragments of relief vases and other vessels. A lenticular bottle with three handles, a jug with a cut-off spout and various jugs were excavated. The most important finds were two relief vases with remarkable figure friezes. They have strong parallels to vases found in İnandıktepe and, like these, were made in the 16th century BC. Dated. After the restoration, they are exhibited in the Çorum Museum.
