Boğazkale is the center of a district in the province of Çorum in central Anatolia in Turkey . The place is 82 km away from the city of Çorum . The district town is home to around 40 percent of the district's population.
geography
The district is located in the south of the province, "sandwiched" between the districts of Sungurlu in the west and Alaca in the east. The southern border is the central district (Merkez) of the province of Yozgat .
history
The place was previously called Boğazköy (gorge village ) , but was later renamed Boğazkale (gorge castle) . Its Hittite name is Ḫattuša or Hattuscha. It was the capital of the Hittites and is now an important archaeological site. The excavated and restored remains of Ḫattuša and the associated Yazılıkaya sanctuary are now accessible as an archaeological open-air museum and form the center of a historical national park . In the place there is a museum with finds from Ḫattuša.
As one of 18 places in Turkey so far, Ḫattuša was included in the UNESCO list of world cultural heritage in 1986 as No. 377 .
1967 Boğazkale was raised to a municipality ( Belediye ).
district
The district was formed on July 4, 1987 by splitting off Bucak Boğazkale from Sungurlu district. At the last census before the change of area (1985) the Bucak had 11,252 inhabitants and consisted of 15 villages ( Köy ) in addition to the capital ( Bucak Merkezi ). Today's district consists of the district town and 14 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 178 inhabitants. The largest village of Yekbas today (2018) has 836 inhabitants, compared to 2,022 in 1985. The county has the second lowest population density in the province.
