The HDL receptor (SR-BI) (also: scavenger receptor B1 ) is a protein in the cell membrane of vertebrates that binds with HDL particles and lipids . In humans, SR-BI is expressed in many types of tissue, especially in the liver , and this is the prerequisite for HDL swimming in the blood to be freed of its lipids in the liver and these can then be disposed of ( reverse cholesterol transport ). Likewise, cholesterol is required in the adrenal glands for steroid biosynthesis ; Here too, SR-BI is the docking point for HDL. Furthermore, SR-BI binds to phosphatidylserine , therefore it is involved in the phagocytosis of apoptotic cells.

SR-BI plays an essential role in infection with the hepatitis C virus and with Plasmodium parasites.

The scaffold protein PDZK1 is necessary for the expression and localization of SR-BI . The decreased expression of SR-BI in mice that were fed a high-fat diet is probably regulated by PDZK1. In the adrenal glands, the expression of SR-BI is regulated with signal transduction via PREB .
