HD 131399 is a young star system in the constellation Centaurus at a distance of about 350 light years . The most massive star in the system is HD 131399 A , a main sequence star belonging to the spectral class A1. The other two stars, HD 131399 B and HD 131399 C , are main sequence stars of the spectral classes G and K. As a double star, they orbit HD 131399 A together with an orbital period of almost 3600 years.

In 2016, the discovery of an exoplanet was published that appeared to orbit the star HD 131399 A and was given the systematic name HD 131399 Ab . The corresponding investigation was carried out by direct observation with the SPHERE instrument of the Very Large Telescope at the European Southern Observatory in the Chilean Atacama Desert . Later, however, after an investigation with the Gemini Planet Imager , it was found that the supposed discovery was probably due to a background star.
