The HMB 2 ( Henschel -Magnetbahn 2) is an electromagnetically levitating test vehicle. It was the person-carrying successor to the HMB 1 test platform and was developed in 1976 by Thyssen - Henschel in cooperation with the Technical University of Braunschweig in Germany. The purpose of the vehicle was like the previous model, the testing of the long stator - linear motor on a 60 meter long test track.

The tests with the HMB 2 were very promising. It then played a decisive role: On the one hand, it was the prototype for the M-Bahn that was later realized in Berlin. On the other hand, the results were an incentive for the German Federal Ministry for Research to discontinue the developments with the short stator principle in favor of those with the long stator. Krauss-Maffei, who had previously developed the Transrapid 04 with a short stator, then founded the “Magnetbahn Transrapid” consortium together with Thyssen-Henschel and Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm . As a result, the Transrapid 05, a new vehicle with a long-stator linear motor, was demonstrated in passenger operation at the IVA 1979 . This also made the HMB 2 the technical ancestor of the Transrapid vehicles that have been developed since then.

Whereabouts

The HMB 2 has been exhibited in the Technikmuseum Kassel on a short section of its route since the 2010s .
