As one of the nine ships of the Caledonia class , the HMS Britannia was commissioned on November 6, 1812. The keel was laid in December 1813 and the launch on October 20, 1820. After it was put into service in 1823, it provided service in the Mediterranean area in the years 1830-1831 and 1841. She was decommissioned in 1843 before being used during the Crimean War as the flagship of Admiral Sir James Deans Dundas , who commanded the British fleet in the Mediterranean and Black Sea from 1851-1854. At the beginning of 1855 she returned to England and was assigned to a hospital ship in Portsmouth , then a cadet training ship in 1859. In 1862 she was ordered to Portland , 1863 to Dartmouth .
In 1869 it was finally sold for scrapping. Her place in Dartmouth was taken by the HMS Prince of Wales , which was eventually also renamed Britannia .
