The HMS Windsor Castle was a 98-gun ship of the British Royal Navy . She was classified as a second rank ship of the line and built by Deptford Dockyard . There the ship was launched on May 3, 1790. In the Napoleonic Wars it was used in the naval battle of Genoa and in the naval battle of Cape Finisterre.

Sea battle at Genoa

In the naval battle of Genoa on March 14, 1795, the Windsor Castle sailed with her commander John Gore in the British squadron under Vice-Admiral William Hotham . The Rear Admiral Robert Linzee was also on board . The British fleet, which comprised three squadrons under one vice admiral each and consisted of 24 ships, encountered the French Armada, which comprised around 20 ships, near Genoa in what is now Italy. During the battle that the British won, 6 people were killed and 30 wounded at Windsor Castle .

Battle of Cape Finisterre

In the sea battle at Cape Finisterre on July 22, 1805, the Windsor Castle fought with Captain C. Boyles in the British fleet against a Spanish-French fleet that was superior to the English. Due to the much better fleet management of the British Admiral Robert Calder , the 15 English ships were able to defeat the 20 opposing ships without great losses. 10 sailors were killed and 35 injured on Windsor Castle . However, a lot of the rigging tore and several stanchions were damaged.

Whereabouts

In 1814, the number of guns at Windsor Castle was reduced to 74. She was now one of the third-rate ships of the line. In 1839 the ship was demolished.
