Ha Seong-nan (* 1967 in Seoul ) is a South Korean writer .

Life

Ha Seong-nan (or Ha Song-ran) was born in Seoul in 1967 and began writing as a schoolgirl. She studied at the Art Academy in Seoul and graduated there in 1992. In 1996 her short story turf appeared , with which she became known in the literary scene. In that year, her first volume of short stories, The Cup of Rubin , was published, which contains eight short stories.

Ha is known for her 'microscopic representation' as her critics call it. Her early works, in particular, show her talent for drawing scenes from the lives of simple people in great detail without being too lengthy or sentimental. In addition to this ability to present things particularly clearly, Has Werke demonstrate a thorough understanding of the subject matter described and show that she knows how to look at seemingly banal and unimportant things with great care. Often she does not directly describe the appearance or personality of a character, but instead brings her protagonists to life through a complex image of memories, expressions, landscapes and surroundings. Schimmelblumen is about a man who searches for truth in the garbage. He believes every garbage bag bears the special signature of the family who threw it away. But even after searching through hundreds of garbage bags, he doesn't manage to develop a single meaningful relationship with others.

In recent years, Ha has devoted himself to more and more social problems. Bluebeard's First Wife is a collection of short stories, all of which tell of tragic but familiar occurrences that could easily appear in a local newspaper. Ha received various awards for her works, for example the " Tong-in Literature Prize" for the short story Schimmelblumen ( 곰팡 의 꽃 ) and the "Prize for Contemporary Literature" for the story Alpha's Time ( 알치 의 시간 ).
