Rosie Malek-Yonan (born July 4, 1965 in Tehran , Iran ) is an Assyrian actress , writer , director and activist.

Malek-Yonan is the descendant of one of the oldest and most well-known Assyrian Christian families, whose roots can be traced back nearly eleven centuries. The Malek family or their tribe came from the village of Geogtapah near the city of Urmia in northwestern Iran.

During the genocide of the Aramaeans (1914-1918), Ms. Malek-Yonan's grandparents left the land of their ancestors. The Malek-Yonan family fled to Mesopotamia , where their father George was born, while their maternal grandmother fled to Russia and gave birth to their mother, Lida Bet-Benyamin. Years later, both families returned to Tehran, where their parents met and married.

She has a younger sister named Monica who works closely with her on many of her projects.

Artistic career

Malek-Yonan is a pianist , composer and actress . She began composing classical music in her youth and later continued her musical studies at the Tehran Conservatory of Music .

After attending the University of Cambridge , she went to the United States , where she continued her music studies with Saul Joseph at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and at San Francisco State University (SFSU) . At the same time she studied acting with Ray Reinhardt at the American Conservatory Theater and at SFSU . A graduate of SFSU with two degrees in music, she won an invitation to study at the prestigious American Academy of Dramatic Arts in the early 1980s .

While still a student, she made her first television appearance in The Denver Clan (1983). After graduating, her acting career blossomed. She had several appearances in television series, such as in California Clan (1986), Zeit der Sehnsucht (1987-1996), Murder Is Her Hobby (1989), General Hospital (1991-2008), Babylon 5 (1995), Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1996), Chicago Hope (1996–1999), Beverly Hills, 90210 (1998), JAG - On behalf of honor (2002–2003) and Shadow of Passion (1999–2003).

Films she starred in include Mr. Success (1984), For Goodness Sake II (1996), Anniversary (2005) and Powerless (2007).

In 2008, her "one woman play" An Assyrian Exodus was presented in Hartford , Connecticut . The work is based on family diaries written during the Great Exodus from Urmia in 1918 .

Human rights activist

Malek-Yonan campaigns for today's Assyrians in the Middle East . It draws particular attention to the genocide of the Aramaeans from 1914 to 1918, as well as to the plight of today's Assyrians in the Middle East since the invasion of Iraq (2003) by the USA and the coalition of the willing .

In 2006 she also produced a documentary on the subject called My Assyrian Nation on the Edge .

Author

Her book The Crimson Field , a historical and literary work, is based on true events during the genocide of the Aramaeans, in the shadow of the First World War , where 750,000 Assyrians were massacred by Ottoman Turks, Kurds and Persians.

Her book Seyfo: Genocide, Denial and the Right of Recognition is a compilation of articles and speeches that were given in conferences of the European Parliament .

Awards

  • In September 2006, she received the Woman of the Year award at the 73rd Annual Assyrian Convention in Chicago, Illinois .
  • For her numerous contributions as an actress, artist, director, writer and activist, Malek-Yonan received an award for Excellence in Arts and Entertainment from the Iranian American Political Action Committee (IAPAC) in March 2008 .
  • Malek-Yonan was named the 2009 Assyrian Woman of the Year at the Assyrian Universal Alliance's 26th World Congress in Sydney, Australia .

Community service

  • Malek-Yonan is a founding member of the Assyrian Cultural and Arts Society
  • In 2009 she became an ambassador for the Swedish organization Assyrians Without Borders
