Hair oil is used for hair care . It is suitable for greasing the hair and fixing the hairstyle.

Hair oil was used as early as the 16th century. Even in Victorian England was Makassaröl used as hair oil. Makassara oil is an essential oil of the ylang-ylang flowers from Indonesia. Such products were then only used by the upper class and dandies . Nowadays this application is no longer of great importance.

application

Hair oils are used on dry, damaged hair. It is distributed in dry or damp hair before combing. In contrast to hair treatments , hair oils do not need a long exposure time, they work quickly. It is also a "leave-in treatment". This means that a hair oil does not have to be washed out.

Due to their different compositions, the hair oils can be divided into three categories.

Hair oils

Normal hair oils mostly contain paraffin oils , vegetable oils , higher alcohols, liquid monoglycerides , fatty acid esters and preservatives . Often, fragrances , dyes and other specific substances are added to them. UV filters can also be added for sun protection. However, some of these are hormonally effective. In cheaper versions, vegetable oils are usually replaced by silicones .

Shake hair oils

Compared to normal hair oils, the shaking hair oils also contain ethanol . The hair oil is diluted to a heterogeneous mixture (oil 2: 1 ethanol). This is intended to achieve better distributability in the hair. Shaking vigorously before use creates a coarse, inconsistent emulsion .

Solid and pasty brilliantines

In addition to the usual components of hair oils and solid pasty brilliantine in addition ceresin , petroleum jelly , lanolin , spermaceti , beeswax , resins or synthetic waxes. Salts - such as aluminum stearate - are also added to thicken it.

The hair should be easier to comb through the use of hair oil. It should also give them shine, a good fit and a smooth grip. This is achieved through the wax or grease film with which the hair surface is coated. Mineral waxes give a better shine than wool wax and beeswax. The solid and pasty brilliantines are also used to straighten strong curls.

Forms of trade

Hair oils are mostly available in bottles and as an aerosol (with propellant gas in spray cans). However, due to the development of modern setting agents and hairsprays , the market share has fallen sharply.
