Habakuk is a German pop band from Frankfurt am Main , which was founded in 1975 as a result of impulses from the 16th German Evangelical Church Congress in Frankfurt am Main.

The band performs Neue Geistliche Lieder , i.e. church songs with pop music-like influences.

In addition to spiritual issues, the main focus is on current and future issues, responsibility for peace, justice and the preservation of God's creation, ecumenism and life and love.

In total, the band has released over 1,000 church and lecture songs. In 1993, the Habakkuk song “Bewahre uns, Gott” (EG 171) appeared in the main part of the Evangelical Hymnbook, which has since been widespread and known throughout German-speaking countries. The main part of the Catholic Church's new praise of God , published in 2013, includes the Habakkuk songs “Fürwahr, he wore our disease” (GL 292), “My narrow limits” (GL 437) and "Beware us, God" (GL 453) “Before the sun was in the sky” (GL 434). A plethora of other Habakkuk songs found their way into the appendices of the Catholic dioceses (e.g. Limburg 2013), the Protestant regional churches (e.g. Hesse 1994), as well as the hymn books of the Evangelical Reformed churches in German-speaking Switzerland (Zurich 1998 ), the Methodist Church (Stuttgart 2002), the Evangelical Brethren Congregation (Basel 2007) and the Federation of Free Evangelical Congregations (Holzgerlingen 2003).

The most extensive compilations of songs from the work of the band HABAKUK are contained in three young hymn books:

  1. "Through Hohes und Tiefes", hymn book of the Protestant student communities in Germany (Munich 2008).
  2. "To be a blessing" - Young Praise from God (Limburg 2011)
  3. “Breath of Life” - hymn book with 333 songs by Hessian poets and composers of hymns from the 20th and 21st centuries (Munich 2014).

The song Lively and Strong and Sharper implemented the theme of the Evangelical Church Congress 2007 in Cologne . The title of the CD Where are you? takes up the motto of the Evangelical Church Congress 2009 in Bremen . So far the band has released 18 albums or CDs.
