Habib Bektaş

Habib Bektaş (born March 1, 1951 in Salihli , Turkey ) is a Turkish-born writer, journalist and literary translator who publishes mainly in Germany and Turkey.

Habib Bektaş moved to Germany in 1972. After various activities (factories, catering), he and his wife Müjgan opened a restaurant in Erlangen, which they operated until 1986. From 1986 to 1991 he worked as a drug advisor and street worker at the drug advice center Mudra-Drogenhilfe Nürnberg eV. From 1989 to October 2011 he and his wife ran the Theatercafé Erlangen they founded . Habib Bektaş lives with his wife in Erlangen and in Turkey . He has two grown children.

Literary work

Bektaş, who saw himself early on as a representative of contemporary German literature (see Piper-Taschenlexikon zur Bavarian Contemporary Literature, 1986), was already writing poems as a casual worker in Turkey, which were published in Turkish literary newspapers. Bektaş 'extensive work, which includes poems, stories and novels, appears in Turkey and, translated from Turkish, on the German-speaking book market as well as in Greece and Brazil. The author's first publications in Germany were the poetry and prose collection Siege des Lebens (1982) and the volume of poetry Without you, every city is a desert (1984). Later he also wrote longer stories, plays, novels and children's books. His novel Scent of Shadows was filmed in 1999 under the title September Storm (Eylül firtinasi) by the renowned director Atif Yilmaz . Furthermore, many of his stories were staged by Bayerischer Rundfunk and TRT (Turkish State Broadcasting Corporation). Habib Bektaş also works as a columnist for the Evrensel and Yeni Hayat newspapers.

2005 founded Bektaş along with Yüksel Pazarkaya the Sardis Publishing , a specialty publisher of contemporary Turkish and German-Turkish literature.
