The Hackney Brook is a watercourse in Greater London . Hackney Brook, which once ran above ground, was completely relocated below the surface in the 19th century.

Hackney Brook arises from two springs near Holloway Road in Horseney, the drains of which converge near Highbury Stadium and flow past it through Clissold Park and Abney Park Cemetery . It crosses Mare Street in Hackney and then flows through Homerton to Hackney Wick and finally flows into the River Lea near the Old Ford Lock.

Until the 1830s, the river in the Stoke Newington area was up to 10 m wide. At its confluence with the River Lea, it reached 30 m. Mere Street takes its name from a pond, also known as Mere, which was a formation of Hackney Brook. Around the 17th century, petty criminals were dipped into this pond as a punishment.

By the early 1850s, most of the watercourse was already under the surface and it was used as a sewer in the parts that were still above ground. Between 1857 and 1861, during the construction of the municipal sewage network, the last above-ground sections were also laid under the surface. Today only a barred outlet into the River Lea is visible.
