Hadaftimo (also Hadaftimo written) is a place and a district in the region Sanaag in northern Somalia with about 2400 inhabitants, most of the Somali belong -Clan of Wars Angeli, a clan family of Harti- Darod .

The area is claimed by both the de facto independent Somaliland and the de facto autonomous Puntland .

History and politics

The roots of the settlement go back centuries and the city has archaeological sites and historical buildings. However, these are mostly in a state of decay.

The place was part of the core area of the formerly very influential Warsangali Sultanate, which existed from the 13th to the 19th century . The grandson and heir of the last ruling sultan, 'Siciid Sultan Abdisalaan', considers the city as his seat today.

The 'Declaration of Hadaaftimo'

In 1989, before the Somali civil war broke out, rebels of the Somali national movement occupied the place. With active support from the population, the Somali Army was able to quickly bring Hadaaftimo back under its own control. Four years later, after two years of civil war, a conference took place in the city, in which leading Warsangeli and also Sultan Abdisalam were involved. The result was a promise that the Warsangeli would not recognize any organizations or autonomous administrations, but would always adhere to the unity of Somalia.

Maakhir

Between 2007 and 2009, Hadaaftimo belonged to the autonomous state of Maakhir , with the establishment of which the Warsangeli clan wanted to take over the administration of the area itself, because without a functioning central government the state administration had collapsed years ago and also to make it clear that the region was still thinking of a common Somali state and is unwilling to participate as part of Somaliland in its struggle for independence. In February 2008 there was a siege of Hadaaftimo by troops from Somaliland, who, however, withdrew before the arrival of armed defenders.

Situation today

The affiliation is difficult to judge today (October 2012). In early 2009, Maakhir officially joined the autonomous republic of Puntland. However, Somaliland has never given up its claims and in the meantime the Northland State of Somalia or Khaatumo State of Somalia has been proclaimed, with territorial claims further south, which also extend deep into the administrative region of Sanaag.
