Mrs. Kunigunde, who lives alone at Schwarzwasserstelz Castle , has a daughter named Fides, whose father is Bishop Heinrich von Klingenberg . At the age of seven, the child is given to the monastery by the mother and enjoys the friendship with the monk Konrad von Mure , she herself goes to the monastery of Bishop Heinrich von Klingenberg.

One day Konrad von Mure and little Fides visit his friend Rudolf at Hadelaub. There he met his son Johannes Hadlaub. The monk would like to take him with him to teach him. But Rudolf is against it. Years later, when his wife gave birth to another son and he saw that he would be a strong boy who could continue his work on the farm one day, did he agree and Johannes was accepted into the monastery. There he learned to read and write from Konrad von Mure and turned out to be very talented.

When Johannes and a monk come to the house of Manesse (Fides' foster father) and recite a Minnelong that he has once copied, Manesse suggests writing down all the Minnesongs that have been sung for many years and archiving them in an anthology. The present Bishop Heinrich von Klingenberg is enthusiastic about the idea and they decide that the young Johannes Hadlaub is the right person for this activity. Johannes agrees. In addition, Johannes meets the young Fides again, with whom he falls in love.

Now he is on the way and collects all the Minneieder he finds, copies them down and archives them. He also writes love songs himself, which he sends to Fides. She feels bothered by the letters and seeks advice from her foster father. He advises her not to do anything and to hand him the letters. At the presentation of the anthology of Minnelieder, Manesse presented the Minnelieder by Johannes and informed him that he was promoted to the status of master by the City Council of Zurich. He receives a laurel wreath from Fides, who is not exactly happy about it because she still does not return his love.

Johannes is now traveling for a long time to collect more songs. When homesickness drives him back to Zurich, he learns that someone is asking for Fides' hand. Since he still loves her, he tries one last time to win her over. In fact, Fides invited him to her mother's castle, which she now lives in. There she notices her love for him and they decide to get married. They announce their decision at a celebration and move to town as citizens.
