Hideo Hagiwara ( Japanese 萩 原 英雄 , Hagiwara Hideo ; * 1913 in Yamanashi Prefecture ; † November 4, 2007 ) was a Japanese painter . He was one of the most famous contemporary Japanese artists.

Hideo Hagiwara started his artistic career after the end of the Second World War with his first graphic works of representational representations. In 1958 he graduated from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in Tokyo .

In the late 1950s he had worldwide success with his abstract works. He has had exhibitions of his woodcut, lithography , etching and screen printing in all renowned museums, such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

In 1967 Hideo Hagiwara taught at the University of Oregon . In 1983 he was awarded the Japanese Order of Merit on the Purple Ribbon by the Japanese Emperor .
