Hagop Bedros II. Hovsepian

Hagop Bedros II. Hovsepian , also Jakob Petrus II. Hovsepian , Armenian Յակոբ Պետրոս Բ. Յովսէփեան (* around 1689 in Aleppo ; † 1753 ) was an Armenian clergyman and the second Patriarch of Cilicia of the Armenian Catholic Church .

Life

Hagop Hovsepian was initially a monk of the Armenian Apostolic Church . 1720 he converted to the Armenian Catholic Church and was Bishop Abraham Ardzivian from Aleppo to priests ordained. Hovsepian accompanied Ardzivian into exile in Kreim (Lebanon). In 1635 he returned to Aleppo as Bishop Ardzivian's deputy, in 1638 he was able to obtain a church for the city's Catholic-minded Armenians and in 1639 obtain permission for his bishop to return to Aleppo. In 1740 he was ordained bishop Abraham Bedros I. Ardzivian, who had meanwhile been elected Patriarch of Cilicia . Bedros I was consecrated Patriarch of Cilicia by Bishop Hovsepian and two clergymen who were also newly ordained. After that, Hovsepian was only able to stay in Aleppo for a while and worked in Kreim together with Patriarch Abraham Bedros I. Ardzivian.

After his death, Hovsepian was elected patriarch in 1749. During his tenure he established the Bzommar Monastery and transferred the seat of the Armenian Catholic Patriarch of Cilicia to the new foundation.
