Hagop Kazazian Pascha ( Armenian Հագոբ Կազազյան փաշա , Turkish Agop Kazazyan Paşa ; * 1833 in Istanbul ; † 1891 ibid) was a high-ranking Ottoman official and politician of Armenian descent who was Ottoman finance minister and treasurer under the rule of Sultan Abdülhamid II .

biography

Life and early career

Hagop Kazazian rose in the bureaucracy of the Ottoman state. In the early years of his career, he was the head of the translation department at Ottoman Bank . After he had discovered a misconduct in the bank, he was appointed by the general manager of the Ottoman Bank to Sultan Abdülhamid II.

Hagop Kazazian, who remained unmarried throughout his life, lived with his mother in the Yeniköy district of Istanbul . Since Kazazian was awarded the Order of St. Gregory the Great by the Pope as a non-Catholic , he has built relationships with the Armenian Catholic Church , a minority church within the Armenian community that formed an independent millet .

Offices

Abdülhamid II appointed Kazazian director of the treasury in 1879 and minister the following year when the treasury was converted into a ministry. Under Kazazian the treasury was reformed, in 1887 he was appointed Minister of Finance. When he faced opposition to his reform plans and spending cuts, he announced his resignation. The Sultan refused to resign and supported Kazazian in his reform efforts.

An influential man, Kazazian championed Sarkis Balyan , a famous architect who was exiled to France for alleged political activities . Kazazian was a member of the Armenian National Assembly , established in 1863 , which regulated secular affairs for the Ottoman Armenians within the Millet system .

Kazazian was awarded the title of pasha as well as a number of orders of the sultan.

Death and aftermath

Hagop Kazazian Pascha died in a riding accident in 1891 on the property of the calendar Kasrı and received a state funeral. Kazazian was replaced as Minister of the Treasury by the Armenian Mikael Portukal Pascha , who served until 1897 and was in turn replaced by the Armenian Ohannes Pascha .
