Hajime Sorayama

Hajime Sorayama ( Japanese 空 山 基 , Sorayama Hajime ; born February 22, 1947 in Imabari ) is a Japanese illustrator .

Hajime Sorayama was born the son of a carpenter and a housewife . He graduated from Imabari Kita High School. In 1965 he began to study Greek and English literature at the Shikoku Gakuin Catholic University . In 1967 he gave up this course and switched to the Tokyo Chūō Art School ( 中央 美術 学園 , Chūō bijutsu gakuen ). He left art school in 1969 at the age of 22. He then worked as an illustrator for an advertising agency and in 1971 he started his own business as a freelance painter .

Sorayama was already drawing as a child, and he was particularly interested in technical details. His style is characterized by a strong tendency towards hyperrealism , with his specialty being particularly realistic light effects. His best-known work is the book "Sexy Robot" published by Genkōsha in 1983 , which revolves around the fetish of shiny chrome robot women . He also painted a considerable number of women in highly realistic lacquer, in riding costumes and as dominatrixes . Sorayama designed a number of front pages for magazines such as Heavy Metal .
