The Halali River is an approx. 90 km long tributary of the Betwa in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh . The river, which usually dries out in early summer (April, May), belongs to the Ganges catchment area .
course
The Halali rises northwest of the megacity of Bhopal in the foothills of the Vindhya Mountains at an altitude of approx. 488 m above sea level. d. M .; it flows in a mostly north-easterly direction through a landscape characterized by deciduous dry forests, is dammed in the Halali reservoir after approx. 38 km and flows into the Betwa after another 40 km at Vidisha .
Places on the river
Especially during the late summer monsoon season , the level of Halali rises enormously and large-scale water landscapes are formed, which has largely prevented the settlement of larger cities and even smaller settlements in the immediate vicinity of the river.
Reservoirs
The river is dammed in the middle of its path in the Halali reservoir, which was completed in 1973 and has a maximum capacity of 227 million m³. This is of great importance for the drinking water supply of Bhopal. In the monsoon season or after heavy or long-lasting rains, a waterfall, a popular destination for excursions, forms at the outflow of the reservoir.
Attractions
Although the state of Madhya-Pradesh belongs to the core zones of North Indian culture of the 1st millennium, there are hardly any sights on the sparsely populated banks of the Halali. Mention should be made of the Buddhist site of Satdhara above the river with its restored stupas and the Heliodoros column near its mouth.
