Haldane is an impact crater on the easternmost edge of the front of the moon , in the Mare Smythii plain . Haldane is a very shallow, almost submerged crater with a double rim, east of Gilbert and north of Kästner .

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1973 after the British-Indian geneticist JBS Haldane .
