Hale is an impact crater in the extreme southeast of the lunar front , south of Wexler crater and southeast of Neumayer . The crater rim is only slightly eroded with pronounced terracing , the interior is largely flat with a central mountain .

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1964 after the American astronomer George Ellery Hale and the British inventor William Hale .
