Halebid (also Halebidu ; Kannada : ಹಳೆಬೀಡು Haḷebīḍu ) is a place with about 6,500 inhabitants in the southern Indian state of Karnataka . Now a small village, Halebid was the capital of the Hoysala Empire from the 12th to the 14th centuries under the name Dorasamudra .

location

Halebid is located on the Dekkan Plateau at an altitude of approx. 875 m above sea level. d. M. in the Hassan district a good 30 km north of the district capital Hassan or 150 km northwest of Mysore . The neighboring town of Belur is only about 20 km to the west. Rain falls mostly in the months May to October.

population

Most of the local residents are Hindus ; Muslims , Christians and Jains follow . The male and female proportions of the population are roughly the same.

economy

The place is surrounded by fields where mostly wheat and lentils are grown. Small trade, handicrafts and services of all kinds dominate in the town itself.

history

Dorasamudra was founded by King Vishnuvardhana (ruled approx. 1108–1152) as the capital of the Hoysala dynasty. At the height of its power, the Hoysala Empire comprised large parts of what is now Karnataka. The army of the Sultanate of Delhi , led by Malik Kafur , plundered Dorasamudra in 1311 and again in 1327, heralding the end of the Hoysala rule. Dorasamudra sank to an insignificant place, which was now called Halebid (Kannada for "old capital").

Attractions

To the Hoysala period of the late 12th century remember in Halebid built Hoysaleshwara Temple and the smaller Kedareshwara temple and two Jain -Heiligtümer. The temples of Halebid, together with the temple of Belur, 16 km to the west, and that of Somanathapura near Mysore, are among the most important examples of Hoysala architecture .
