features

The beetles reach a body length of 4 to 4.5 millimeters and are thus slightly larger than the similar Haliplus variegatus . Her body is rust-red in color. The upper wings have strong rows of dots, the spaces in between are provided with fine dots. They also have short, elongated spots that are rarely missing. The epipleurs also have a series of rough points. The wing cover seam is at least partially blackened, and a narrow yellow stripe runs lengthways between the seam and the elongated spots. The head of the animals is small and slightly narrower than half the pronotum base. The pronotum has no longitudinal lines at the base, is rounded in the center at the front edge and bulged on the sides next to the front angles, which are not very prominent.

Occurrence and way of life

The species is distributed in Europe, North Africa, the Caucasus , Turkestan and Siberia . It is not uncommon in Germany in the north and east, in the west and south, as in Austria, only locally and rarely. The animals live in clean, stagnant and slowly flowing waters.
