Haliplus variegatus is a beetle from the family of water treaders (Haliplidae).

features

The beetles reach a body length of 3 to 3.5 millimeters and are thus slightly smaller than the similar Haliplus fulvus . Her body is red-yellow in color. The upper wings have strong rows of dots, the spaces in between are provided with fine dots. They also have short spots, some of which run diagonally. The epipleurs also have a series of rough points. The wing cover seam is at least partially blackened, between the seam and the elongated spots, unlike the similar type, there is no spot-free stripe, but the spots directly adjoin the seam. The head of the animals is small and slightly narrower than half the pronotum base. The pronotum has no longitudinal lines at the base, is rounded in the center at the front edge and bulged on the sides next to the front angles, which are not very prominent.

Occurrence and way of life

The species is found in almost all of Europe, Syria, Asia Minor and North Africa. It is rare in Central Europe. The animals live in clean, stagnant and slowly flowing waters.
