The hall 32 is a 2013 opened event center in Gummersbach , the result of a former production facility of the system installer L. & C. Stein Müller . It is the oldest surviving building on the former 18-hectare factory site.

Former production hall

L. & C. Steinmüller was founded in 1874 as a steam boiler factory. In 1880 the company founders bought the so-called Stettenwiesen on the outskirts of the town of Gummersbach. By 1900 the company already had around 400 employees.

Parts of today's Hall 32 were built around 1890. It was primarily used as a brass foundry . The function changed again and again over the decades. With the rapid growth of the company, the hall experienced multiple expansions, modifications and repairs. On an official plan of the company for the open house in 1982 it was labeled "Maschinenbau". The employees of L. & C. Steinmüller last knew the building as the "machining workshop".

In 1999, Deutsche Babcock AG took over L. & C. Steinmüller and closed production in Gummersbach. The production halls had thus become superfluous.

Conversion to an event center

Hall 32 during the renovation in December 2012

On July 1, 2002, the city of Gummersbach bought the premises in order to revitalize it with the help of an urban planning framework and to initiate an orderly urban development. With the help of Regionale 2010 , the structural funding program of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, a new piece of downtown Gummersbach was to be developed at the location, and Hall 32 was to be converted into an event center for the city and the region. The state of North Rhine-Westphalia provided funding of 4.1 million euros. In order to keep the memory of 125 years of Steinmüller alive on the site, the city's administration and politics decided to keep one of the halls - as the “conscience of the location”. Due to its long history, the choice fell on Hall 32. "The past, present and future of the location can be experienced here equally for people, which makes Hall 32 the ideal flagship for the entire location," said the Managing Director of Regionale 2010, Reimar Molitor . A “sustainable re-use” as a cultural and meeting place should be found and a corresponding concept developed. The plans for the renovation come from the Essen architect Heinrich Böll . The shell construction work began in January 2012 and was completed in July 2013.
