Halothamnus bottae is a species of the genus Halothamnus fromthe foxtail family ( Amaranthaceae ).

Halothamnus bottae is a 30–50 cm high shrub with thorny, pointed blue-green branches. The obliquely protruding leaves are triangular and only 0.7–3 mm (rarely up to 8 mm) long. The flowers are 2.6-3.6 mm in size. The winged fruit reaches 6–9 mm in diameter. On the underside, the central attachment point (umbilicus) and 5 radial nerves clearly protrude between the rounded, egg-shaped pits.

The subspecies Halothamnus bottae ssp. niger plant during drying are black, the fruit wings are dark.

Occurrence

Halothamnus bottae is endemic to the Arabian Peninsula ( Saudi Arabia , Yemen , Oman , United Arab Emirates ). It grows in open bushland and semi-desert steppes in dry, stony locations, from 0 to 2000 m above sea level. The subspecies ssp. Niger occurs only on the southern Arabian Peninsula, in dry and hot lowlands up to 100 m above sea level (similar plants from East Africa belong to Halothamnus somalensis ).

In Oman, dried Halothamnus bottae is used as snuff . Halothamnus bottae is grown as a forage crop. It is used in folk medicine to strengthen the hair and to treat women's ailments. Sick sheep are also treated with it for anthrax, scabies or wounds. The leaves contain the aliphatic ingredients n-hexacosane, 1-triacosanol, 1-triacontanol, 1-henetriacontanol, stigmasterol and 1-tritriacontanol.

The first description of Halothamnus bottae was in 1845 by Hippolyte François Jaubert and Édouard Spach . Synonyms for Halothamnus bottae Jaub. & Spach are Caroxylon bottae (Jaub. & Spach) Moq. and Salsola bottae (Jaub. & Spach) Boiss.
