The Pragsattel stop is a junction of the Stuttgart Stadtbahn and bus routes, both operated by the Stuttgarter Straßenbahnen AG (SSB) . It is located on the ridge of Prague in the Stuttgart-Nord district . The tram stop is designed as a half-open station, which means in a low position , but without covering and thus illuminated by daylight. Because it is connected in four directions with the city center , Bad Cannstatt , Feuerbach and Zuffenhausen and is served by lines U6, U7, U13, U15 and U16 as well as bus lines 43 and 57, it is an important transfer stop .

history

1909 was the station Prague tavern on the Pragsattel crossroads of tram lines Cannstatt Feuerbach and North Station -Zuffenhausen.

Old tram stop, 1979

Operated from 1924, the Stuttgart streetcars there a depot with Wagenhalle and service apartments. After 1935, the Pragwirtshaus was again a mere stop. It was at ground level in the middle of the street crossing at the Pragsattel , which is the intersection of three federal highways and one of the busiest crossings in Stuttgart.

For the Stuttgart subway, which was decided in 1973, the Pragsattel was intended as one of the end stations of the Y-shaped network structure in the first expansion stage. However, these plans did not materialize.

With the renovation of the intersection in the 1980s, the renovation of the tram stop was also planned, which has now been moved from the center of the intersection to the south-western side of the intersection and in a half-open position, while the four tunnel accesses were built. In the direction of Feuerbach, the structure was connected to a tunnel opened in 1984 under Siemensstrasse with the Maybachstrasse stop . A compulsory point for the construction was the Prague bunker built in 1942 , a high bunker.

The low level of the platforms gave rise to criticism; It was feared that passengers would be annoyed by falling car exhaust fumes and that it would be difficult to change trains due to the outer platforms initially planned as the only platforms. In response to this criticism, the stop was rescheduled, so that in addition to the outer platforms, which were necessary for the tram, as they only had doors on the right-hand side as a one-way vehicle , a central platform was planned for the planned light rail. The light rail vehicles for this station were equipped to open doors on both sides. This functionality is also used on a platform section of the mineral baths station at the Berg mineral baths .

The outer platforms were initially built at half the length as an elevated platform for light rail trains and as an underground platform for tram trains; the inner platform from the beginning with a continuous elevated platform. Tram traffic began on July 23, 1990; On November 3, 1990, the U5 and U6 lines began to operate.

The stop was part of the design competition of the International Horticultural Exhibition 1993 ; one entrance to the exhibition was at the bus stop. The Siedler / Fränkel architectural association won the competition for the stop.

After the last tram line, line 15, was converted to light rail operation in December 2007, the outer platforms were increased to their full length.

In 2017, the name of the stop was given the addition of Mercedes-Benz Bank . In 2017, 18,000 passengers used the stop every working day, 11,000 of them transferring passengers.

Structure of the station

Arriving light rail train

The station is the only train station in Stuttgart with continuous platforms on both sides of the tracks. This corresponds to the “ Spanish solution ”, whereby both sides of this station are intended for both entry and exit. The design makes it easier to switch to other lines. Platform entrances are at both ends and on a walkway across the middle of the three platforms. The barrier is placed on the central platform by an elevator and on the outer platforms by ramps. The platform length of around 80 meters is sufficient for two coupled vehicles of the Stuttgart Stadtbahn . The track accesses are underground, with route branches just behind the platform ends. The branch in the north-west is free of intersections , the branch in the south-east is at the same height.

The station is demarcated to the northeast by a stone-clad wall and to the southwest by a stepless meadow.

Above ground to the north-west of the tram station is the stop for bus lines 43 and 57, the substation of the same name for traction power supply, a kiosk , a bicycle parking facility and a station for the RegioRadStuttgart bicycle rental system .
