The Hamilton Old Parish Church is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish city of Hamilton in the Council Area South Lanarkshire . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The Scottish King David I founded a church on the site as early as the 13th century . In 1450, James Hamilton, 1st Lord Hamilton, had a collegiate monastery built there with papal approval . The church, completed in 1462, was located near what is now the Hamilton Mausoleum . In order to free up space in the park of the Hamilton Palace , James Douglas-Hamilton, 5th Duke of Hamilton, had the church demolished in 1732, which was used up to that time. In the same year, construction of what is now Hamilton Old Parish Church began, based on a design by the Scottish engineer William Adam . The first mass was read towards the end of 1734. The small dome was added in 1841 and an organ was added towards the end of the 19th century. Modernization measures were carried out in 1925 and in the 1990s.

description

The Hamilton Old Parish Church is located in the park-like depression of the Cadzow Burn in the north of Hamilton. The Cadzow Bridge runs a short distance to the northwest. It is the only church that William Adam designed. It is designed in contemporary Georgian style . Since Adam reused planks from a warship on the roof structure, there are lead bullets there. Stained glass windows designed by Anita Pate show the church's history going back to the 6th century. In memory of James Stevenson-Hamilton , the founder of Kruger National Park , some windows show African wildlife.
