Johnny Hammond Smith
Johnny "Hammond" Smith (born December 16, 1933 in Louisville, Kentucky , † June 4, 1997 ) was an American jazz musician and composer .
In addition to Jimmy Smith and Dr. Lonnie Smith is John Robert, known as Johnny Hammond Smith, the third of the Schmidt organs. The Hammond B3 - organ is his instrument. He discovered her for himself when he heard Wild Bill Davis . With her he accompanied Nancy Wilson, among others . After moving to New York City , he played with his own small formations in the clubs. But only the contract with Prestige , which released him as a modernist on the New Jazz label, brought him some recognition. Nevertheless: his contribution to jazz history is significantly less than that of his "namesake", even if the output of LPs is surprisingly extensive. Some of it has now also appeared on CDs. In 1960 he worked on Lem Winchester's album Another Opus .
