Han Su-san (born November 13, 1946 ) is a South Korean author.

Life

Han Su-san was born on November 13, 1946 in Inje County, Kangwon Province . He studied English literature at Kyung Hee University in Seoul. Since 1997 he has been Professor of Korean Language and Literature at Sejong University .

In 1981 he was arrested because the state censors interpreted some of his lines from the serial novel The Streets of Desire in the daily JoongAng Ilbo as mockery of President Chun Doo-hwan . He and his colleagues were detained and tortured for a few days. Traumatized by this event, Han Su-san went to Japan in 1988 and did not return to South Korea until 1992. Writing helped him come to terms with the past.

Han Su-san began publishing in the 1970s and his writing style soon made him a success. Attentive to details, he weaves his poetic writing style into thought-provoking novels, many of which deal with the importance of life. Han Su-san describes the crows ( 까마귀 ), which consists of five volumes, as his life's work. It is about the life of Korean men who were deported to Japan for forced labor during the Japanese colonial era .
