history

The sport of handball was first introduced in India in the early 1970s by Sh. Jagat Singh Lohan from Rohtak ( Haryana ) - a graduate of the YMCA College of Physical Education in Madras (today's Chennai ). He was instrumental in founding the Indian Handball Federation in 1972 and was elected its first general secretary. His knowledge, which he acquired during a stay in Germany during the Olympic Games in Munich , was also helpful . Founding members were the national associations from Andhra Pradesh , Uttar Pradesh , Haryana, Vidarbha and Jammu and Kashmir .

The first national handball championship was held in 1972 at Sir Chhotu Ram Stadium in Rohtak. The representation of Haryana won, Vidharba won the silver medal.

Handball is still a marginal sport in India today . The country plays no role at the international level. India can rarely qualify for the Asian Championships; India has never been able to take part in a World Cup. The greatest success is an eighth place for women at the 2012 Asian Championships , in which an Indian team won two preliminary round games for the first time.

organization

In 2010, the association elections took place under the observation of the Ministry of Sport, as the Ministry had been informed beforehand about the annual general meeting and subsequent elections. This set a precedent for other sports associations in the country.

The HFI has 37 associations, mainly state associations from the individual Indian states; but z. B. also the Railways Handball Team , a team of the state railway company Indian Railways .
