Tanja Handels

Tanja Handels (* 1971 in Aachen ) is a German literary translator .

Life

Handels studied English , comparative literature and theater studies in Aachen, Cologne, Birmingham and Munich and, after a few years as a translator, editor and project manager at the Atlas Society for International Communication (now: Lionbridge ) and marketing assistant at Heinrich Hugendubel Verlag, completed the postgraduate course in literary translation at the LMU Munich . She is a member of the Association of German-Language Translators of Literary and Scientific Works (VdÜ). Handels translates fiction and factual texts from English and has received awards for her work, including the Heinrich Maria Ledig-Rowohlt Prize 2019, the translator grant of the Free State of Bavaria 2018 (for her translation of the essay collection Feel Free by Zadie Smith ) and one of the Munich-based artists 2011 Literature Fellowships (for her translation of Sinneswechsel. Occasional essays by Zadie Smith).

In addition to her translation work, Tanja Handels gives workshops and seminars.

Handels lives and works in Munich and is the first chairwoman of the Munich Translators' Forum.
