The Handelshof is a former office and commercial building in the Hanseatic city of Lübeck (Schleswig-Holstein), which has been used as a hotel since 2009 after extensive renovations. The facade preserved from the original building is a listed building .

history

In 1924 the office and commercial building on the forecourt of the Lübeck main station, built in 1908, was built by the Hamburg architects Christian Zauleck and Franz Hormann for the company Paetow & Stühmer . It closes off the square to the west. The steel frame construction was based on Hamburg office buildings from the same building era. The facade of the building in the style of Expressionism with elements of neo-Gothic is clad with clinker brick . Above the entrance portal there are two sculptures made of clinker ceramic by Richard Kuöhl .

The building with a usable area of 2200 m² was owned by the state of Schleswig-Holstein . It was used by the Office for Rural Areas , an authority of the State of Schleswig-Holstein, and other institutions such as the State District Office and a travel agency. In 1972 the Handelshof was placed under monument protection. Parts of the building had been vacant since the second half of the 1990s after tenants moved out. In 2000, the building was covered with scaffolding and tarpaulin because parts of the facade were crumbling. In November 2004 the Office for Rural Areas left its location. In 2007 the state of Schleswig-Holstein sold the Handelshof to the Berlin real estate company Avenida.

The building was gutted, refurbished, converted into a hotel and leased to the Ramada hotel chain in 2008/2009 while maintaining the facade . The Possehl Foundation contributed 150,000 euros to the renovation work amounting to around eight million euros . Since July 2009 the hotel chain has been operating the four-star “Treff Hotel Lübeck City Center” hotel in the Handelshof with 96 rooms, a restaurant, bar and fitness facilities.
