Handl Tyrol GmbH produces smoked and air-dried meat specialties . The company was founded in 1902 and achieved sales of 137 million euros in 2018 with 544 employees.

history

In 1902 the grandfather of the current owner, Karl Handl, opened a butcher shop in the middle of Pians . 18 years later, two more branches were opened in Landeck and Galtür . Julius Meinl was supplied with packaged sausage products from 1923. In 1970 Karl Handl took over the company. The company headquarters was moved to the outskirts of Pians. In 1990 Handl Tyrol became a real brand. The Trofana Tyrol motorway service station, which Karl Handl planned with the owner of the 5-star Hotel Trofana Royal , Hans van der Tannen, opened in 2002 .

In 2012 the company was handed over to the fourth generation to Karl Handl Familien Beteiligungs GmbH, where Christian Handl and Markus Handl are in charge of management.

In the course of the Covid 19 pandemic , it became known in June 2020 and the company admitted that the company's products - despite the use of the term "Tyrol" in the company name - also contain components from foreign slaughterhouses and butchers (such as the Tönnies Holding from Germany). The company was therefore accused of "deception" by the Tyrolean Chamber of Agriculture . Networks with Clemens Tönnies , who has a seat on the company's supervisory board, also became public.

Locations

Handl Tyrol operates two production sites in Tyrol ( Pians and Schönwies ) and one in South Tyrol ( Naturns ).

The company currently sells its products directly in 26 "Speck-Stuben".

Handl bought a plot of land from TIWAG in Haiming for a third location in 2016 and is already building on it. It is about half of the leg basket meadows, which is historically burdened, as there were forced labor and prisoner of war camps of the Nazis. Around 50 heirs of those farmers who had the land extracted from them at the time have been complaining about the return or compensation at least since 2016. By March 2017, the foundations of a school had been excavated in cooperation with the Federal Monuments Office, and TIWAG announced the opening of its archives. Governor Günther Platter (ÖVP) commissioned a historian's commission in mid-2017 to deal with the "Haiming forced labor camp". The heirs state that the farmers, who at the time had to sell for the intended construction of a large power station, had been promised a right of repurchase if the power station was not built. That happened, the heirs demanded legal clarification by the end of the year in August 2017.
